WHO warns swine flu 'unstoppable'
The UN's top health official has opened a forum
in Mexico on combating swine flu by saying that the spread of the
virus worldwide is now unstoppable.
World Health Organization head Margaret Chan added that the
holding of the meeting in Cancun showed confidence in Mexico, which
has been hard hit.
The WHO says most H1N1 cases are mild, with many people
recovering unaided.
As the summit opened, the UK alone was projecting more than
100,000 new cases of H1N1 a day by the end of the summer.
The Director General of the World Health Organization, Doctor
Margaret Chan, has formally stated that the swine flu outbreak is
now a global pandemic.
Speaking at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Dr Chan said the
further spread of the virus was inevitable.

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in England has jumped by
nearly 20% in a single day, latest figures show.
The Health Protection Agency statistics show that 535 new cases
were confirmed on Friday, bringing the total to 3,364.
Scotland registered another 72 cases on Friday, an 8.5% rise,
bringing the total to 922, and a 25th case was confirmed in Northern
Ireland.
With 12 cases confirmed in Wales, the total number of confirmed
UK cases now stands at 4,323.
Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer for England, warned
on Thursday that the UK could soon expect to see a surge of new
cases.
He predicted tens of thousands of cases of swine flu could be
emerging each week by the autumn.
The West Midlands remains the most badly affected area of
England, with 158 new cases confirmed on Friday, bringing the total
to 1,516.
27th June US health officials estimate that at
least one million Americans have been infected with swine flu since
the H1N1 virus emerged nearly three months ago.
The number is far higher than cases actually reported to the
authorities.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said many
cases were mild, although 127 people had died.
6 June 09 The number of swine flu cases in the
UK has climbed to more than 540.
The total stands at 541 after 19 more cases were confirmed in
England, as well as 13 new ones in Scotland and one further case in
Northern Ireland.
22 May Public school Eton will close for
a week after a pupil tested positive for swine flu, a school
spokesman has said.
The Berkshire boys school, which was attended by Princes William
and Harry, was informed on Wednesday that a 13-year-old boy had
tested positive.
Health authorities advised the school to shut until 7 June.
It comes after health officials announced a further 17 people in
the UK were diagnosed with the virus, taking the total number of
cases to 203.
Fourteen of the new cases - 13 children and one adult - are part
of an outbreak now totalling 64 cases linked to Welford Primary
School in Birmingham.
The number of swine flu cases in Japan has risen
rapidly - with more than 120 cases now confirmed.
Mexico has revised down the suspected death toll from swine flu from
176 to 101, indicating that the outbreak may not be as bad as was
initially feared.
13 May A nursery and a primary school in
Greenock are to be closed for a week after two children were
confirmed as probable swine flu cases.
A five-year-old boy, who is at Ravenscraig Primary, and a
three-year-old attending Ladybird Pre-Five Centre have tested
positive for influenza A.
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said 23 pupils in the school's
primary one class were being treated with Tamiflu.
She added that health officials were at the nursery to provide
advice.
Ms Sturgeon said the cases appeared to be connected to a
19-year-old resident of the town who was confirmed with swine flu at
the weekend.

lan Johnson told MPs one of the new cases was a child at one of the
five schools that have already closed. The affected school -
Alleyn's in Dulwich, south-east London - has already seen six pupils
diagnosed with the H1N1 virus earlier this week. More than 400
people in the UK are currently being tested for the virus (426 cases
are under investigation.)
